Door Folding Gate Installation Guide
The installation of a door folding gate is simplistic compared to many other folding security gate options. Folding door gates do not require the same hinging ability as a folding security gate, nor does it require floor drilling for pin locking. Carefully follow the instructions below for a simple DIY installation of your Preferred Security Gates door gate solution.
Folding Door Gate Hardware & Tools
To prepare for the installation, you will want to gather 5/16" x 2" long lag bolts with or without 3/8" lead anchors or 5/16" x 1" bolts. The mounting surface determines the hardware you use.
Wood Mounting: use 5/16" x 2" lag bolts. Steel Surface Mounting: drill for 5/16" x 1" bolts. Brick or Concrete Surface Mounting: use 5/16" x 2" lag bolts in a 3/8" lead anchor.
You will also need a drill, a 1 3/4" masonry drill bit, and a 1/4" masonry or wood drill bit. The door gate panel will have a hinge bar and a locking bar.
Installing a Door Folding Gate
- Position the gate against the door casing or frame at the desired height. You may need to prop the gate up or have a helping hand.
- Mark the frame or mounting surface, outlining where the holes in the hinge bar are.
- Drill pilot holes into the door frame. Use the 5/16" x 2" lag bolts for wood surface mounting. For steel surface mounting drill for 5/16" x 1" bolts. Use 5/16" x 2" lag bolts in a 3/8" lead anchor for brick or concrete surface mounting. As seen in Figure 1.
- Realign the hinge bar of the gate and secure it to the mounting surface with the 5/16" bolts. This step is shown in Figure 2 and may be easier if the gate is expanded.
- With the gate now secured to one side of the door frame, extend the gate to the opposite side, place the locking bar along the mounting surface, and align it with the padlock holes on the gate.
- Mark the holes and drill pilot holes. Again, use the 5/16" x 2" lag bolts for wood surface mounting. For steel surface mounting drill for 5/16" x 1" bolts. Use 5/16" x 2" lag bolts in a 3/8" lead anchor for brick or concrete surface mounting.
- Realign the locking bar and secure it with the 5/16" bolts.
- The door folding gate installation is now complete. You will want to extend and collapse the gate slowly several times to avoid warping and to work out stiffness.
